WHY TAKE THE COURSE?
In the classroom, Complexo do Branco Salvador, teacher Camila Andrade, aims to give a new look to people who work in volunteering for the aspect of being a “white savior”. What does that mean? Treating the local population as victims and putting them in uncomfortable positions, such as in photos and other aspects. This concept and others you will see in this course, contributing to a better insertion in the place of volunteering and interaction with the local population.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
- The meaning of the expression "white savior" and how to avoid the repetition of this pattern;
- The theoretical and historical basis of this expression;
- Interact with the local population in a conscious way;
- Not to expose the local population, especially children, in photos;
- What not to do when traveling as a volunteer.

WHO WILL YOU LEARN FROM
Camila Andrade:
PhD in Political Science from UFRGS, with a Sandwich Doctorate from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR). Master in International Relations from UFSC, with field research in Switzerland and Rwanda. Project Specialist at Senac-SC and International Relations Analyst at UNIJORGE. She is currently a postgraduate student in Afro-Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the Consejo Latino Americano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO).
She is the coordinator of @ampliaRI, in addition to having a community for the democratization of African Studies, @camilaafrika.
