Online Course: Turkey: Historical Tradition and Leader in Reception of Refugees

In this class, the historian, a specialist in the Middle East with extensive experience in the region, Monique Sochaczewski, presents a current overview of the numbers of refugees in general and the Turkish participation in welcoming them. It then starts with a history of how the Ottoman Empire (1299-1922) already had a tradition of welcoming refugees, whether Sephardic or Ashkenazim Jews, Circassians and “white Russians” (non-communists) among others. Understand a little about the history of migration in the region today called the Middle East and see how audiovisual works can be interesting sources for this theme.

Monique Sochaczweski

Monique is an international historian specializing in the Middle East, as well as a tour guide accredited by Embratur. He holds a degree and a master's degree in History from UERJ, a PhD in History, Politics and Cultural Goods from FGV and a post-doctoral internship at the same FGV. She was a professor at FGV and at the Army Command and General Staff School (ECEME), as well as Academic and Project Coordinator at the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). He currently teaches at the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research, IDP, in addition to working in the Study and Research Group on the Middle East (GEPOM). He lived in Israel and Turkey, accompanied a group of Brazilians in Azerbaijan, and gave a TEDx lecture on what refugees teach us. Author of “Oriental Tropics/Tropical Orients: Reflections on Brazil and the Middle East” and “From Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul: Contrasts and Connections between Brazil and the Ottoman Empire (1850-1919)”.
